Automobile Service Centers and How They Really Operate
This is an outline taken directly from the chapter "Automobile
Service Centers and How They Really Operate" from the book "Car
Secrets Revealed".
20 Billion Dollars in Automotive Repairs Each Year are
Unnecessary
This is partially due to fraud and partially to the
incompetence of the mechanic. I have been on the
receiving end of a mechanics incompetence. I took my
1989 Ford 5.0 Liter Mustang into the mechanics shop to have
the oil changed which should have only cost me about $25 to
$30 dollars. Instead it cost me $900. The mechanic
decided that oil changes were better handled by his untrained
apprentice who liked to use air tools to loosen oil pan bolts.
He did not check to see if the torque wrench which way the
torque wrench was set to turn in and he torqued the oil pan
bolt right off the oil pan. To repair the oil pan on a
1989 Ford 5.0 Liter Mustang means raising the engine to remove
the oil pan. So much for my inexpensive oil change.
I had to pay because the apprentice mechanic swore up and
down that the bolt was already stripped, which was not
possible since the car was not leaking oil. Since I
needed the car, and I was going to be charged storage, I had
to pay to have it repaired at his shop. I had no legal
recourse since I could not disprove anything the apprentice
had said and the owner of the garage was more than happy to
take his side since it meant he was going to get a lot of
money for a simple job.
One of my friends went into a large well known tire outlet
that also does tune-ups and brake work. He wanted to get
his Mazda Miata tuned up. He was quoted $125 for a
complete tune-up and he agreed to the price. When he
went to pick up his car he was charged $300 for the tune-up.
He was told that the tune-up price did not include the price
of the parts. He paid $27 for 4 spark plugs that should
have cost him $2.50 each.
From these experiences I learned that:
